Locating The Correct Sinus Congestion Medication

By Rosario Sinegal

Miserable colds are often associated with the winter months. After years of searching there is no cure for a common cold, but home remedies continue to relieve the symptoms. These nasal congestion relief remedies may be helpful when suffering from a cold.

With the first sniffle one should begin pushing fluids. When one's body is hydrated, it is easier to deal with the symptoms of a cold. The fluids help to thin mucus so it is easier to breathe. Coffee, caffeinated tea and colas should be limited as they have a diuretic effect one's body and may increase dehydration.

Inhale steam to break up the mucus and stop the drippy nose. Stand in a hot shower or place a pot of water on the stove to boil. While humidifiers are effective, they produce the same steam as water on a stove. Adding eucalyptus oil to the water may open sinuses even more.

When blowing the nose, use the right way. Carry tissue with you so you do not sniff mucus and germs back into the sinuses. Use gentle force when blowing to keep the germs out of the ear canals and reduce ear infections. Close one nostril and clear one side of the airways at a time.

Use saline nasal sprays or irrigate the nose with mild salt water. A neti pot or bulb syringe can be used to irrigate the nose. If you choose to make your own salt water solution, water should be boiled before use. Distilled water from a fresh bottle can also be used without boiling.

Keep the body warm and rested. Warmth and rest allows the body to have the needed energy to fight the cold. Avoid getting a chill by using a blanket to keep warm when resting. Pushing to complete a task can cause one to be sick longer.

Drink hot liquids for the steam they provide and the additional hydration. The hot liquids can also soothe membranes that are swollen in the nose and throat. Decaffeinated teas are a great choice for many people.

Elevate the head at night. This helps to keep the sinus cavities empty of fluids and allows the individual to breathe. Add extra pillows to make it easier to sleep.

If the cold does not get better within a week, it is time to see a doctor. During the winter months, colds that continue can quickly turn into bronchitis or pneumonia. While these home based congestion relief remedies are good for colds, they cannot fight these more serious conditions.
