New inventions are developed every day almost. When new things come out, the people who come up with the ideas on how to use them get to work. Such was the situation when gel water beads were invented. They were developed because the USDA was looking for new ways to conserve water in soil. What they did was almost change an entire industry.
The problem with those materials was that they got very heavy and very large when they got wet. Not only that, but they could only hold a certain amount of liquids. Once they got beyond capacity the liquid would just no longer be absorbed and it would leak. Sometimes the material that was holding the liquid and now full would also leak.
This discovery lead to various new ways to store liquid and also various new ways to absorb it. Anything that was in the business of trying to absorb water was subject to be improved by this new material if it could be worked out how to put the two together. One of the better examples of this was the diapers we use for our babies.
First, it was cloth. We used to just wrap our children in various thickness of cloth and ties that to their bottom. Of course these needed changing quite often and cost parents a fortune in cleaning bills. Not to mention the major pain in the behind it was to clean and change these clothes on a baby. There had to be a better way, and there was.
They are also used in gardening too. Basically anything that has to do with storing liquids or sucking it up. The various uses are amazing when you come to think about it. Look at diapers for example. Before these gels diapers could only hold about 5 times their weight in liquids. Today, because of these products they can hold a little more than eleven times their weight in liquids.
So many new products were invented or improved because of these polymers. Money was made and the amount of good that was done with them was amazing. Take the medical industry for instance. New ways were discovered to make hot and cold packs that would not be dangerous if the broke open. No longer were dangerous chemicals needed for various other applications as well.
At nearly 11 times their mass in absorption the beads worked better than anything ever has. They made the entire industry notice and the changes made within it as well. After seeing how well they worked new and improved products started turning up everywhere. Manufacturers that made all sorts of things started to try them in a variety of products.
