We all have gone to the hairdressers at some point of our lives. We often think they just stand chatting to their customers all day long with a pair of scissors in one hand and a brush or blower in the other. Don't be fooled as this is a very demanding job which requires the employee to be versed in a number of different skills including communication.
Hairdressers are required to attend a beauty college in order to gain a degree allowing them to work with all the different products and instruments. In order to gain experience at their job they would be asked to work a few days a week in a saloon at the same time.
Becoming a junior hairdresser may not appear much to the outsider but they are the life line of a saloon as without them the saloon would cease to function. They have several different jobs which they are responsible for including making sure there is always a supply of dry towels available for each client who enters the saloon that day with or without an appointment. One of the most important jobs is to answer the phones and take bookings in order to do this they would need to be a terrific communicator which takes time to learn. Keeping the clients happy with magazines and refreshments are also one of the important tasks of the saloon.
The least glamorous tasks behind running a saloon are often the blood line of the shop. This all starts with juniors who then become seniors at the saloon. In order to build up a list of returning customers the staff would require to be remember their names and small details about them so that the client feels loved and respected. Even remembering family members names or recent events will go a long way to building your list.
Seniors can help juniors become more experienced by offering them small jobs to complete around them such as blowing drying hair and helping pin in perm rollers or even try and mix up a dye for the client's hair. All the little jobs will help the junior's confidence.
Senior staff play a leading role in keeping the clients happy and returning to the saloon time after time. They get to know their customers over a period of time and more importantly learn their likes and dislikes.
