Biotechnology Services & How They Work

Many medical research teams and scientists use the services and expertise of various biotechnology companies to help them study a host of different types of diseases. These firms are equipped to handle the high-tech processes that are often too time-consuming or expensive for a lab to do in-house, so having a source for various biotech services is quite important. After all, this is an industry that seeks to make the world a healthier, happier place where the diseases we face today are a thing of the past.

One common service is the creation of a specific antibody known as a monoclonal antibody. This service has proved to be very useful because these antibodies can be used in the creation of drugs to fight many diseases. Of course, your body does produce antibodies naturally to fight germs, viruses and other foreign invaders, but artificially created monoclonal antibodies can force the body to fight a specific problem. By modifying these antibodies to specifically only target a certain antigen, such as one that is found on cancer cell, you can protect other healthy cells in the process. Creating a monoclonal antibody obviously is a complicated process, which is why this is a popular service provided by various biotech corporations.

In the past few decades, scientists have discovered that many diseases may be caused by problems with the protein in our cells. As a result of protein issues, neurodegenerative disorders may occur. Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease are some of the disorders and diseases that are caused by protein-related problems that eventually cause the death of neurons. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, is another type of degenerative disorder caused by problematic proteins.

With that in mind, biotech companies are now providing services such as custom peptide synthesis to aid in studies of these diseases. Peptide synthesis is the production of peptides which are chains of amino acids which eventually form proteins. You can't casually create peptides out of nowhere and for that reason; peptide synthesis was invented and is a service provided by some biotech companies.

Other processes carried out by labs include protein sequencing and protein expression. Technology has greatly lessened the burden of these tasks and while they are complicated and time consuming, there are many companies equipped to provide these helpful services. Researchers can synthesize or modify proteins and create experiments aimed at dealing with protein problems.

The process by which one determines the exact amino acid sequence in a protein which is done or carried out by automated techniques is called protein sequencing. For understanding the way cells form and function, this type of sequencing is very important. All of these studies and services are leading us to potential cures for a variety of diseases, and hopefully we will enjoy a future where problems such as Alzheimer's or cancer can be easily targeted, treated and ultimately cured.
