Up until recently, I don't think anyone would have been able to make such a connection. However, this is not the only case and it's probably one of the interesting that I have come across in terms of tumor research. This being said, is it possible that these cases are connected or is it a matter of one coincidence occurring after another?
TIME.com posted a piece on the matter and it was learned that Daulton had glioblastoma, the most aggressive condition that can be seen in the realm of tumor research. There have been other names that were stricken with this condition in the past as well, Gary Carter and Ken Brett being a couple of several. Is it possible that their position of catcher had anything to do with it?
Steroids have been an issue in sports for quite some time and they've been especially prevalent in baseball. However, other sports have made use of this and this is where NFL defensive lineman Lyle Alzado comes into the picture. He passed away because of this condition back in 1992 and he was known to have used anabolic steroids throughout his career. Even though he had brain lymphoma - not glioblastoma, like Daulton, I think that this is one point which more than worth bringing up.
I think it is difficult to predict whether these factors can be considered correlated. This is one condition which it is difficult to predict the source of. Maybe there is a possible connection to be made and we just have not been able to find out what the specifics are. What is known, though, is that work is constantly being done on the matter and that it is possible that we will find out results in the realm of research before long, which I hope is the case.
