By Jonas Varig

Milliions of people have been jogging for a long time because they enjoy it and also love the health benefits. After a good warm-up, all you need to do is go outside and begin, and you know you'll be doing your body a great favor. So keep on reading, and you'll learn a few solid tips that you can use to get even more benefits from your daily jog.

You should always stretch before and after jogging. You can prevent many different kinds of injuries by stretching. There is obvious impact when you run, or jog, and the stretching warms up your muscles, makes them more flexible and able to safely absorb the impact. It's also important to remind yourself to relax your mind and muscles while you are stretching. You can hurt yourself through improper and really aggressive stretching - slow, easy, relax. Never push to the point of pain when you stretch, and if you do feel pain immediately and "slowly" back off.

Most importantly is to remember to ease into stretching whenever you do it, and relax. In order to stay healthy and avoid injuries when running, be careful about the terrain where you run. Make sure you keep away from running on steep inclines or on surfaces that are very rocky or that have lots of obstacles. When you run or jog on hills and in terrain that's not flat, it can bring some spice to your routine, but unless you have done it before, you should stick to flat terrain. Running up and down steep inclines can really put some pressure on the joints in your legs and feet, and that's why it's best to start out on regular terrain when you begin your routine.

Do be sure to learn how to warm up, stretch, and then afterwards you'll want to warm down and stretch a little, as well. You will be helping yourself avoid injuries by proper cooling down or warming down from a good run. Just as you want to start off slowly, you should end your run the same way, slowing down before you stop. Then it's a good idea to do some light stretches. After this, you can rest with your feet up, at a level above the heart, as this helps the heart return to a more normal load after the increased activity.

It's always good to check with your doctor, but if you can run then you can receive the benefits, and you can start at practically any age - so don't let that stop you. Many runners report that they really do look forward to that runner's high they get. Please do learn more if you want to run, and it's a lifetime activity, but do remember our tips for staying safe and healthy.
