Is Your Teenager Showing The Signs Of Mental And Emotional Disorders?

By Gary Half

Becoming a teenager is tough and not just for the young person as the parents too often struggle. During this time in your children's life you may struggle to understand what they are going through, but it is vital that you understand the signs of emotional and mental disorders. Is you your teenager experiencing difficulties? Here are a few things you want to look for:

Suicide Jokes or Comments- In the past few months has your teen commented or joked about committing suicide? Now is the time to consider outside help for the young adult in your life. Would you be surprised to learn suicide is a leading cause of teen death? This is one reason it is so important for parents to be aware of a teenager's thought process. Moreover, teens do not tend to joke about suicide and if they are mentioning it they are probably contemplating.

Drug or Alcohol Experimentation -- All teenagers will try drugs and alcohol at least a few times, but not many parents know about it. Boys will often try alcohol at the age of 11, and girls will do so by 13. If you notice that your child's eyes are red, they are vomiting or sick to the stomach often, they have poor judgment, their personality has changed, their grades have fallen, or they are in trouble with the law, it's probably a sign that they're trying out their freedom with drugs and/or alcohol.

Sullen or Listless- Feelings of guilt and worthlessness are common companions to depression, as is a sullen or listless demeanor. Teen's often struggle with depression which can range from mild to severe. If you notice your happy child is now an angry teenager who is constantly putting themselves down, it could be time to ask for help. Depression can leave kids feeling helpless and all alone.

Abusive- Your teen may not be abusive to their brothers and sisters, but that does not mean they aren't bullying their peers. In severe cases teenagers have been known to abuse, torture or even kill defenseless animals such as the family pet. Studies have shown a clear link between these behaviors in youngsters and violent behavior toward people later in life. Behavior and even personality disorders are often diagnosed.

Highs and Lows -- Depression is a common thing among even healthy teenager, but depression that is followed by periods of mania could be a symptom of bipolar disorders. Mania means being very active, with an elevated mood, unable to sit still or focus, and being too full of energy. It will be very noticeable when your child becomes manic, as they'll often do active tasks late into the night, sleep less, and their judgment will be impaired. They will often take dangerous or foolish risks.

Parenting is not for the faint at heart, you are always on guard to rescue your children if they need it. When mental health issues come into the picture it is even more vital that you act to get them the help they deserve. As with any issue, the sooner you can take corrective steps the better! Seek help immediately if you notice signs that your child is in distress.
