By Maryanne Goff

The use of vintage advertising signs as decoration artifacts in houses and offices has been on the rise in these recent times. What is more unique about these items is their exceptional look and make. They are very attractive and give a good reference to the old times. They are therefore designed by people with the skills and knowledge within this area who ensure that the traditional aspect is maintained through out.

The designing process is quite a tough one. The size has to be exact. Usually a length of between eighteen and thirty six inches and a width of twelve to twenty four inches are used. The preferred size and shape depends fully on the needs and desires of the user.

The metals used are the American steel type. These metals are passed through a process called sublimation. This is a way of writing whatever information is needed on them. Through this process, preferred images are backed onto the metal in the form of a powder backing. The essence is to bring out a finish that is appealing and durable. This is so depending on where they shall be put such that they can withstand any form of corrosion as time goes on.

The sanding process comes in handy after that of sublimation. This is merely the cleaning and glossing stage. The items are rubbed unto gently using sand particles on the writings and the images. It is a way of polishing them up and transforming them to the aged appearance. This is the final step and when completed, hanging nails are attached and they become ready to use.

When it comes to decoration within houses, these signage have become so common. It is because, they come in numerous shapes and sizes which are very appealing to the eyes and colorful. With many being worthy in terms of prices, most people who purchase these items prefer keeping them in the house as treasured items. They hang them at strategic places for memory lane reminder of the good old times.

The best advice is to keep them in a glass casing. This helps to remove the component of dust settling on it and also incurring extra costs of cleaning. Since they are viewed as treasured items, no owner would want constant cleaning to be done on it. This is a way which makes them to maintain their old appearance without any form of tempering. Besides, the costs of cleaning may be cumbersome to bear.

For one to find out an imaginative item, serious screening needs to be done from the outside appearance. The imperfect nature of the writings on it is a good teller. Due to the use of hand writing, they do not match in size and placement. Where this is not the case then, there is a high likely of use of computer applications in their design making it to be forged.

The final basis of originality of vintage advertising signs is that of visible brush strokes. These ones are a must and come with uneven feel as a result of raw paint. Where this aspect is missing, the buyer needs to know that the item is illegitimate.
