The Main Benefits Of Tummy Tuck

By Isaura Downey

Tummy tuck is a surgical procedure that is used to tighten the muscles of the abdomen and to make the tissues in the region firmer. It is also known as abdominoplasty. During the surgery, fatty tissues and excess skin are removed from the central and lower abdominal regions. Abdominoplasty is done to persons that have sagging tissues particularly after pregnancy or following major weight loss.

The types of abdominoplasty in existence vary in extent. The main ones include high lateral tension, extended, circumferential, partial and complete abdominoplasty. Each of these procedures takes a varying amount of time depending on the amount tissue that is removed. Typically, longest of them takes about 5 hours while the shortest takes about two hours.

The complete abdominoplasty procedure is one of the most commonly performed. The surgeon makes two incisions; the first extends from hip to the other through the pubis and the second is made around the umbilicus so that it frees it from the skin. The skin between these two incisions is retracted to expose the underlying muscles and fascia. These tissues are then tightened with sutures. Liposuction is performed on the layers of fascia by removing excess amounts of fat. The area is washed with fluid and dressed.

In contrast to complete abdominoplasty, partial abdominoplasty utilizes small incisions. These must, however, be large enough to allow for detachment of underlying fat tissues of the low abdominal region. After removal of fatty tissues, the skin is stretched downwards and any redundant parts removed. Liposuction is often helpful in refining the process.

The extended abdominoplasty is a combination of a complete abdominoplasty with another procedure known as a lateral thigh lift. The high lateral tension abdominoplasty is a surgery that stretches muscles in a horizontal plane rather than vertical. This method is more technical demanding but yields the best results. Circumferential abdominoplasty is often done together with a buttock lift and is recommended for persons who want major weight loss.

The results of abdominoplasty are widely variable. The main determinants of success include, among others, the severity, the technique employed and the skill of the surgeon. After the surgery, one needs to avoid strenuous physical activity until they recover. They need to wait for up to 4 months for full healing.

There are several risks that may arise from the tummy tuck procedure. The commonest include fluid accumulation, skin changes, loss of skin, swelling and wound dehiscence. It is important to take proper precautions to prevent these occurrences.
