Custom Made Soap Info And Tidbits

By Kathy Kaufman

Soap is an item that is basically, by chemistry definition, fatty acid salts. It is primarily used for the general purpose of cleaning, bathing and washing a myriad of things. The creation process can be performed just about anywhere and it involves several ingredients such as lye, fats and oils. Custom made soap manufacturing is booming within small businesses and is considered by some to be superior.

The first thing to do would be to identify and acquire all the necessary materials needed for the process. The fats and the oils can be taken from both vegetables and animals sources. Another requirement is an alkaline solution necessary to complete the overall process.

Fat and oils have three components that make up triglycerides. It is the combination of a trio of fatty acids, attached to a singular molecule of glycerol. Lye, which is the alkaline solution, produces a chemical reaction needed for the end results to become reality.

The name of this chemical reaction is saponification. This comprises of hydrolyzed fats that are converted to free fatty acids. Combine this reaction together with the lye and crude soap is the end result as expected. There may be excess residue left, which can be utilized in a different manner or destroyed depending on your choices.

Beyond the basic process of creation, a lot more things can be taken into consideration concerning the finished product. Aesthetic factors such as the color is one example. Another is the fragrance of the end product. The ingredients needed for these attributes are quite simple to acquire and use.

Rosin and fat are what influences the color. The grade of the fat and that of the rosin are the deciding factors to take into account in this instance. It may be worth noting that rosin of the same grade may produce different colors, for the reasons involving the density, acid number, saponification number and other usual constants.

When it comes to the smell, fragrance oils can be used to affect the result. Fragrance oils are made from different chemical mixtures that are blended in order to make a specific scent. This is the same component used by candle makers for their candles. After the oils have been mixed or at least retrieved, it can be mixed in with the rest of the ingredients for the smell.

Commercial products tend to dominate the market but there is an opinion growing amongst some groups that home made variations are actually superior. Their reasons for this are the use of better quality ingredients together with the freedom to customize. Others reasons are the fact that it is more environment friendly and it supports smaller businesses over large corporations. The natural glycerin used is said to be preferable to the synthetic versions.

Making custom made soap or buying them from small businesses and manufacturers is often a great idea. The process is easy to learn and can be done at home or anywhere else for that matter. The increasing popularity also means an increasing market for this type of business and it would not be a bad idea to pursue that path.
