Safely Clear Snow Off Your Roof

By Jim Thorpe

As winter approaches, the world quickly becomes a beautiful and enchanted place. However, the beauty of ice, icicles, and snow can become more difficult to appreciate when it becomes dangerous. In the holiday season especially, appreciating the beauty, and staying safe are extremely important.

First, we can consider the quality. Choosing steel roofing is like choosing to go an IMAX opening night, complete with a big squishy chair, a tub of popcorn, drink, and some sugary snacks. You lose yourself in the experience and every physical sense is satisfied by the IMAX experience. It's big, shiny, quality, and the effects will last a long time.

On the other hand, traditional shingles are like renting a RedBox and watching it on you ten-year-old TV at home. It's convenient and cozy, and maybe you'll even pop yourself a bag of microwave popcorn. It's not a bad option, but clearly not nearly the elite or lasting experience it could have been.

First, don't play like Santa and think you belong up on the roof. This is the most dangerous method of clearing your roof of snow. One misstep and down you go. Or, your added weight could (like Santa's sleigh) be the breaking point for you roof.

Thousands of Americans fall off their roofs each year while putting up Christmas lights, and the beauty of the season is definitely decreased by these tragic occurrences. Staying safe while on a rooftop, whether clearing off snow, or putting up lights, is an important part of keeping the holiday season wonderful.

Movie fanatics and popcorn addicts would affirm the same about their IMAX evening out. In the end, you might pay big upfront for a long lasting steel roof, or pay later to fix holes and leaks. So think - would you rather have one grand expense, or let the rental fees build up. For those unsure of where their allegiance lies (pocketbook or experience) the choice might be a little more difficult to make.

In order to stay safe on a rooftop, there are many things that should be considered, including the depth of the snow, the sturdiness of your ladder, the slipperiness of the roof, and the usefulness of various tools. Many tools can be used to help you stay safely on rooftops this holiday season.

Just like some people love the incredible sensory attack of an IMAX movie, others might appreciate a simpler, less intense home experience. The more traditional, homey appearance of an asphalt roof might be just the thing to turn a house into a home. People who grew up in a house with traditional roofing may not like coming home to what looks like a shiny, futuristic lair.

But, moral of the story - no matter which you chose, you'll still end up with a house with a functional roof on it. And that is what is important. Steel roofing may blind birds and asphalt may leak in a storm, but you've still got a roof over your head.
