Italian Olive Oil & The Idea Of Grades

By Robert Sutter

There are many different grades of Italian olive oil to consider, which might not be something that the general consumer has ever thought about. After all, they simply believe that this oil is healthy and that it doesn't matter which types there seem to be. That being said, what exactly are the grades to talk about and how are they ranked? I believe that this is a point that deserves to be talked about because, to me, it more than stands a viable point of conversation.

Extra virgin Italian olive oil is not only one of the types to consider but it is easily the highest level to consider. Authorities on the matter like Unaprol can understand why it is, seeing as how it is the type which has the lowest amount of acidity. Keep in mind that this is also seen as the most natural oil type out of all of the ones to consider. Its flavor is much more noticeable, which makes it the most ideal for a number of different recipes.

Basic virgin oil may seem similar on the surface but it could not be any more unique. The way in which this differs from extra virgin, though, has to do with acidity and this is where the idea of classification comes into mind. Extra virgin possesses less than 1% acidity, whereas virgin in general contains anywhere between 1 and 3.3% acidity. Make sure that you keep this in mind as you find yourself differentiating a number of different types, seeing which ones are the most vital.

Light oil is seen as the lowest grade and there are a couple of reasons for this. First of all, it doesn't exactly have fewer calories - as the name would have you to believe - though the flavor more than definitely takes a hit. It's also worth noting that it isn't the healthiest of the oil types to take into account. Even though many individuals may like using it for the sake of cooking, I would like to think that there are much better alternatives to bring into the picture.

Italian olive oil comes in a number of grades, which goes without saying. However, I don't think many people truly understand the grades in question and all of the health benefits which hare tied into each of them. I think that they are graded differently for a number of reasons, as the aforementioned choices had listed. You have to be able to assess all of the facets of each type and go one to select the proper oil that can be used in the long term.
