Details Of A Tummy Tuck Surgical Procedure

By Bernard Miner

The medical term for a 'tummy tuck' is an abdominoplasty. This is a surgical procedure undertaken in order to remove excess skin and fat from the stomach area. Its purpose is to tighten muscles within the abdominal wall, and is often considered by persons who have excess tissue resulting from pregnancy or a great deal of weight loss.

An abdominoplasty is useful to certain people with problems of this nature. If a person's abdomen is too large for the body's size, or is a hindrance, skin and fat can be removed. The surgery is also useful to strengthen abdominal muscles, or to hold separated muscles together.

This surgery should always be recommended by a professional doctor who has thoroughly examined the patient. There are a number of factors to consider that will determine the outcome of the surgery, such as whether the patient has scarring from former surgical procedures. The patient should also inform the doctor about future weight loss plans.

Before this type of surgery can be recommended, an examination of the patient should occur. This observation will allow the doctor to determine how much excess skin and/or fat needs to be removed. It will also help the doctor determine which type of procedure will be best.

During surgery, the surgeon will make a cut slightly higher than the pubic area, between the hips. Another incision is also made so that the navel is not attached. The surgeon will now gain access to the muscles and fascia that need tightening by separating the skin from the abdominal wall.

The surgeon will use sutures during the procedure. The sutures tighten the muscles, and re-attach the naval in its new position. During the process, all extra and unnecessary fat and skin tissue is taken out.

Liposuction is also usually involved in the procedure. This is used to ensure that the abdomen has a smooth appearance. After surgery, the patient will have a dressing over the areas where the incisions were made, and may also have a compression garment. Excess fluid will be allowed to drain.

There are several ways in which a surgeon can perform this type of surgery. There are options for only a partial abdominoplasty, and there is an operation referred to as an extended abdominoplasty. A full tummy tuck could take several weeks to heal (usually up to four weeks), however, the recovery time will vary according to the patient and the procedure.
