List on hand, you drop off the dry cleaning and check it off. Check. Then you mail those cards and letters and acquire the school supplies. Check and check. It feels good to check stuff off your list, doesn't it? Then you stop off at the grocery store and pick up your items. Check. It might have been tempting to skip the list and say, "I don't need to write this down. I'll remember. I have run these errands a thousand times."Then, you might have forgotten the dog food or to mail those letters. As you pull into the driveway, you sigh and say, "Oh well, I will go back tomorrow."
What harm did that do? Not much at first. I guess your dog is going to be a little hungry until the next day, and the card for your aunt might not get there by her birthday. Then, tomorrow comes, and guess what? Because you did not write those things down, you forget again-and again. You see my point, and my point isn't to feed your dog. This is what happens in life. If we do not write our specific goals down, then we do not stay focused on doing them. We don't have that list to refer to that keeps us on track. Set specific goals, and write everything down. Then ask yourself those key questions: What exactly do I want? When am I going to accomplish it?
Develop a Purpose for Your Goals
Now that you've got a list of specific goals, you're likely asking, "What's next?" In step two, you develop a purpose for every goal. As you were figuring out your future goals, you likely asked yourself what you wanted to do. Now, you should ask yourself why you're setting these future goals. The reason you have to ask the 'why' is that you have to know why you would like to achieve these goals. Answering the "why" ignites your passion. It's in finding the strong, red-hot 'why' that you're most likely to carry out the goals you set for yourself. If you can't come up with a purpose, then you don't want the goal as much as you thought you did. However, if your purpose is strong enough you're going to figure out the why, and you'll find a way to make that goal happen.
If you would like to make more money because you've got a mortgage, and you would like to keep the roof over your family's head, then you've got a strong hot why. If you've got kids, and you would like them to keep warm in the winter, you need money for heat, so you've got a strong hot why! If you're going to lose your job if you don't have transportation, then you've got a strong hot why to get your vehicle repaired. If you've got the strong, hot why then you'll find a way to make the money you need. If your reason for wanting to make more money is that you would like to be rich, then that reason isn't a strong enough purpose to keep you going when life knocks you down.
The point of making goals is so important to me that I have personally made a lot of specific financial goals. One of the reasons I want to make more income each year is because I invest in Las Vegas real estate, and I plan to continue purchasing more and more commercial lots. That way I know that even when I'm long gone, my kids will have an automatic income stream from my real estate investments. Additionally, I want to have a steady income so that I can continue to support my mom. These are my strong hot whys.
