Aluminium Extrusion Manufacturers and the Processes Followed during Extrusion

By Christopher Devereux

Aluminium extrusion manufacturers used a specialised processes to produce aluminium products that have both a fixed and cross-sectional profile. Aluminium has a great flexibility, making it a common choice when it comes to producing extrusions of complex shapes. Decorative ironmongery, car components, exhibition display components, mullions, shop display components and decorative trims are all great examples of the type of products manufactured by aluminium extrusion suppliers.

Aluminium extrusion is a not only a specialised process, but a complex one as well. It involves a number of steps, every single one crucial to produce high-quality aluminium extrusions. The process of aluminium extrusion is undertaken by those experienced and trained within the field and includes the following:

1. The Production and Installation of the Die - In order to produce aluminium extrusion profiles, manufacturers first need to make and install a die form. The die form ensures that the end product is the correct size and shape. After the die is made, it is installed in the barrel of what is called the hydraulic extrusion machine.

2. The treatment of the Aluminium - Before aluminium extrusion manufacturers can use the aluminium billet, it is preheated to a certain temperature. After this aluminium billet is preheated, it is placed into the hydraulic extrusion machine, enabling the extrusion process to continue.

3. Pressing and Emptying - The last two steps of the aluminium extrusion process entails the pressing of the aluminium billet through the die using a hydraulic ram. After this step is completed, the press is emptied and cleaned, ready for the further production of aluminium extrusion.

Aluminium is an expensive material, but by using the specialised extrusion process, aluminium extrusion manufacturers are able to create less waste, ensuring for a more cost-effective extrusion process. This process also allows manufacturers to produce long and straight extrusions - something that would have been difficult to accomplish using other materials.
